A herniated disk is a 'slipped disk' that occurs between two vertebra of the spinal column. The disk acts as padding between each of the vertebra. A herniation or prolapse can develop when part of the soft center of a disk, the nucleus, tears and ruptures. This nucleus material spreads out into the harder walls of the disk, forming a bubble of nuclear gel. This is what is called a herniation or prolapse. At the first stage it is usually self contained within the disk walls. However if the condition worsens, and the disk wall then ruptures, this nucleous material escapes again and lodges around the spinal cord. This is a very painful condition.
Traction and manipulative reduction for the treatment of protrusion of lumbar intervertebral disc – an analysis of 1455 cases. Yefu L, Jixiang F, Zuliang L, Zhengian L. J Traditional Chinese Medicine. 1986; 6:31-3.
In this research 1455 cases were evaluated for lumber disc protrusions. There was a marked improvement by the use of manipulation and traction.
Reduction of a confirmed C5-C6 disc herniation following specific chiropractic spinal manipulation: a case study. Siciliano MA, Bernard TA, Bentley, NJ. Chiropractic: The Journal of Chiropractic Research and Clinical Investigation Vol. 8 No. 1 April 1992.
This is the case of a 39-year-old male cable technician who complained of right neck and arm pain. He had a football injury 20 years prior and had some similar, temporary pain at that time. He now had an aching, deep pain running from the base of his neck to the right elbow and sometimes running sharply down his arm. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), thermography and Kronamaz muscle testing apparatus documented a C5-C6 disc herniation. Under chiropractic care the patient became symptom free and a later MRI revealed a reduction in the herniation.
This is just a small sample of the many studies done on herniated discs. It is important to do a proper diagnostic work up on patients with hernia's, however with proper care excellent results can be obtained. A small amount of patients will still need surgery.
With chiropractic treatment improvement is often seen after 2-3 weeks. Tens of thousands of patients have responded quickly to chiropractic methods. If you are suffering, take control of your problem, in a safe and natural way. Call our office if you would like to talk with us
